Reasoning

What really makes a successful website? And I’m not talking about successful for search engines, I’m talking about successful for conversions and gaining new clientele?

A good attractive and polished website is absolutely required for a good first impression, conversions and acquiring new clientele. It’s like a good business portrait for your professional profiles. And remember a first impression is the most important one because it can either make or break you for many people… many people seem to forget or not know about this. It’s also not just about having a website, people work off of responsiveness and/or attractiveness, not high SEO scores…

These are the things that drive conversions:
• Page load speed
• Page smoothness
• Time to interaction
• Layout
• Design
• Copy and readability

Performance and SEO scores mean absolutely nothing if your website takes ages to load, isn’t interactive quick enough and/or is unattractive/cluttered/hard to navigate through. There are numerous studies and statistics on people’s attention spans and how they directly correlate to a slow page and also their opinions towards an unattractive website.

Remember :
People also seem to forget that quality and worksmanship takes time and dedication, but those things pay off in the long run because people can definitely tell the difference between a cheaply made website and a quality one. And me personally (and many others that I have asked), would much rather do business with a company that has a nice polished website opposed to one that has a cheap ugly website. Also, to reinforce the understanding of the need of a good and beautiful website design keep in mind that an ugly and/or outdated website design looks similar to a sketchy and malicious website. Because many sketchy and malicious websites are quickly put together with not much thought behind them and have outdated/ugly layouts.
You buy a $100 or less website, you get a $100 or less website. If you aren’t going to invest in an aesthetically pleasingly designed and functional website, why is anyone going to buy or invest in your services and/or product? For some, this could also be a reflection of the amount of care you have and put in for your work/services/products as well…
Also, remember that with almost all things in life, mass produced anything is almost certainly of inferior quality compared to that that is masterfully crafted on with time and care. Time and care ensure a high quality and functional product that you won’t be ashamed of to show someone else, time and patience are key. So make sure your website functions and looks good the first time around so that you don’t have to spend more money to correct and fix the problems and embarrassment of having an ugly and/or nonfunctional website that is hurting your business more than helping it.

Statistics

Just google search how important design and responsiveness of a website are to conversions, but I’ll just leave a few points here for food for thought :).

A website’s visual complexity and pro-topicality (topicality means: the quality of being interested at the present time, and/or of relating to things that are happening at the present) are what shapes user’s first impression of a website. With that said, it can take anywhere from 17ms-50ms for a person to judge a website based off visual appeal alone.

Two critical negatives of a poorly designed website are low conversion rates and high bounce rates. So if your conversion rate is low and bounce rate is high, be assured that you are in absolute need of redesigning your website.

If a website takes more than 10 seconds to become interactive users lose attention and their perception of completing the page task is broken.

As the number of elements on a page increases from 400 to 6000, the probability of conversion drops 95%. Also, as page load time increases from 1 second to 6 seconds, the probability of a mobile site visitor bouncing increases 106%. With that being said, 70% of mobile pages take nearly 7 seconds for the visual content above the fold to display on the screen.

Walmart saw up to a 2% increase in conversions for every 1 second of improvement in load time. Every 100ms improvement also resulted in up to a 1% increase in revenue.

So to summarize these studies:
Design is for acquiring potential clients, keeping people interested, and making sales. A website does not have to be that of the latest trend designs, it just has to be aesthetically pleasing, spacious, and polished.

Performance is for keeping people interested long enough to make sales and for SEO optimization.

• Performance and design are tied at the hip, you need both for a successful and impressive website that will retain customers and make sales. A website can be blazing fast, but if it’s ugly and/or cluttered it will turn people away. And inversely, if a website is beautiful and spacey, but is extremely slow and unresponsive it will also turn people away. Although, design is slightly more important than performance.

• A website is a first impression. And a good first impression is very important and lasts indefinitely. It can also make or break a potential client and also your reputation. So make sure you leave a good one.

• Less is more!
